Terminology

handicap - this is a barrier, something in the way. Ex: stairs are a handicap for someone who uses wheelchair (there is no such thing as a handicapped person)

disability - a disadvantage, deficiency, or inability, especially a physical or mental impairment that interferes with or prevents a normal achievement in a particular area. Almost 20% of Albertans have some type of disability.

adaptation - A change that has been made to allow greater access by person's with disabilities. Some examples are that accessible washrooms have:

  • sensored sinks
  • nothing under counters to allow wheelchairs to fit
  • stalls are wider
  • doors are wider

accessible - changes, or adaptations have been made to allow greater access by person's with disabilities.


Ways to get a disability:

There are several ways to get a disability:

  1. From a disease. A famous example would be Stephen Hawking.
  2. From an accident. Another famous example would be Christopher Reeve.
  3. To be born with it (congenital). A well known person born with a disability is Albert Einstein.
